Environmental Performance Improvement / Energy Efficiency

Helping buildings comply with energy efficiency laws while cutting costs

BUSINESS CHALLENGE

The Kyoto Protocol and recent EU directives are imposing new obligations on building and facility owners everywhere, in order to promote energy efficient buildings which can boost productivity, keep workplaces healthy, and have a more positive impact on the environment. Designing or retrofitting buildings to be energy-efficient can result in substantial reductions in operating costs, energy consumption and emissions of harmful greenhouse gases which contribute to climate change. However, to achieve energy efficiency in buildings, expert advice and assistance is essential.

SOLUTION

What is Environmental Performance Improvement?

This service provides clients with an energy diagnosis of their buildings and facilities, in order to find ways to reduce consumption of gas and electricity. Calculating a building’s energy performance involves studying aspects such as thermal insulation, heating systems, air conditioning, natural ventilation, passive lighting and heating from the sun. In addition to helping clients make substantial savings in energy and operating costs, this service also enables them to comply with new European regulations. In the European Union, standards have already been drawn up and are being adapted by national authorities, mainly in the form of mandatory energy efficiency regulations.

What are the key benefits?
- Reduce energy consumption in buildings
- Identify opportunities for cost savings
- Minimize impact of the company on the environment
- Reduce environmental liability
- Improve operational efficiency

FAQ - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • What are the international standards for efficient use of energy?

Countries that signed the Kyoto Protocol are required to use less oil, gas and coal in order to reduce the greenhouse gases emission. The EU Directive 2002/91/EC on the energy performance of buildings came into force in January 2006. It was incorporated by all EU Members' national legislations and complies with Kyoto targets. The Directive ensures that building standards across Europe place a high emphasis on minimizing energy consumption.

  • What is the Energy Performance Certificate?

The EU Directive on energy performance of buildings will affect nearly all EU citizens. The most visible change it has brought to European energy issues is the Energy Performance Certificate. This certificate is required whenever apartments, houses and buildings are sold or rented. The European Union has allowed three years (from January 2006) for each Member State to implement this part of the Directive. The certificate must also be issued when a new building is constructed. Large public buildings are required to display their Energy Performance Certificate publicly.
