Bureau Veritas Grandly Launches Two New In-service Technology Services of Nuclear Power

16/05/17

From April 27 to April 29, 2017, Bureau Veritas, carrying two new in-service technology service of nuclear power, attended biennial “The 12th China International Nuclear Power Industry Exhibition”, and discussed together with many nuclear power enterprises the current situation of nuclear power industry, exploring the future of Chinese nuclear power.

Bureau Veritas attending The 12th China International Nuclear Power Industry Exhibition

Bureau Veritas has been expanding Chinese nuclear power business since 1997, which has been exactly 20 years so far. Bureau Veritas has participated in numerous large projects of Chinese nuclear power such as Qinshan Phase I, Qinshan Phase Ⅲ, Ling-ao Phase II, Sanmen, and Haiyang AP1000 nuclear power projects, and it has accompanied and witnessed the starting and rapid development of Chinese nuclear power industry. Nowadays, the development of Chinese nuclear power market is relatively slow, and many nuclear power enterprises have a wait-and-see or even pessimistic attitude on Chinese nuclear power market, which has huge impact on the service and manufacturing enterprises as well as design institutions that focus on new projects in the market. As an independent third party organization in the field of nuclear power, Bureau Veritas has started to shift its business to service in service.

As the world’s only enterprise that understands all the reactor types and that can provide service for them, Bureau Veritas participated in the quality and safety supervision of the world’s first AP1000 and EPR, and it was authorized by the National Nuclear Safety Administration of countries including France, Finland, Argentina, Australia and so on, and it became a cooperative partner of French Association of Nuclear Island Equipment Design and Construction Rules. Even so, "it is not advisable to simply copy the in-service inspection business provided for EDF in France." Li Wenjiang, general manager of general industry business group of Industry & Facilities Division of Bureau Veritas, mentioned that at present China already had four enterprises including China National Nuclear Corporation, Suzhou Thermal Power Research Institute of China Guangdong Nuclear Power Company and State Nuclear Power Plant Service Company to provide pre-service inspection, shutdown maintenance and other mandatory services. Bureau Veritas must improve concept and innovate centering on places essential to the operation of nuclear power plant, yet which everybody used to pay little attention to.

For the routine testing service of nuclear power plants, Bureau Veritas will focus on the promotion of two new technologies including industrial shaft CT scanning and oil monitoring in 2017.

The first new technology - industrial shaft CT scanning
When the nuclear power plant starts and stops, the torque is often very large, resulting in shaft fracture, and the recondition and shaft changing are rather troublesome. For example, the circulating water pump of conventional island, once broken, needs to be stopped completely. And once the conventional island stops running, the nuclear island should also adjust the power accordingly. However, through the new technology of industrial shaft CT scanning, we can prevent and learn in advance whether the shaft is injured, and determine when to replace the equipment, thereby greatly improving assets safety and equipment reliability.

The second new technology - oil monitoring
Behind the monitoring is a large database. Via artificial intelligence and big data, Bureau Veritas is able to analyze what kind of oil to use for different kinds of machines. Loames, the latest developed online system for oil monitoring, is currently on line. This system establishes a set of online database for the oils of the entire power plant. Historical data, alarm information and oil abnormalities will be automatically passed to the clients.

"These two technologies are both preventive, and are exclusive to Bureau Veritas. We hope to be able to add these two technologies into the annual inspection of nuclear power plant projects, which can achieve preventive maintenance and greatly improve assets safety and equipment availability to avoid temporary shutdown." Explained Li Wenjiang.

Under the gloomy environment of market, Chinese nuclear power still has a bright road of “Step Out”. Committed to the escort of Chinese nuclear power export, Bureau Veritas is also sparing no effort to lay out. Once the overseas project is started, nuclear power market will usher in explosive growth. In terms of assisting Chinese nuclear industry to step out, Bureau Veritas is able to assist Chinese nuclear power projects as well as equipment to step out. As a third party inspection, testing and certification institution, Bureau Veritas is able to support the general contractor to carry out laws and regulations investigation involving nuclear safety, environmental protection, health and safety and assist the main contractor company to conduct biding risk analysis and response, which are all very critical fields that can directly determine the success or failure of the project.
