BUREAU VERITAS ATTENDS SYMPOSIUM ON FOREST CERTIFICATION FOR NEW GENERATION PLANTED FORESTS AND SMALL-SCALE FARMING

30/12/14

Linyi City (Shandong province) successfully held the Symposium on Forest Certification for New Generation Planted Forests and Small-scale Farming from Oct 27th to Oct 28th. The symposium was sponsored by the China Green Carbon Foundation and World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF), and organized by the Linyi Forestry Bureau. Present at this symposium were various stakeholders in the forest certification field, including: the State Forestry Administration; Shandong Forestry Department; Linyi Forestry Bureau; World Wide Fund For Nature; certification bodies; FSC® China; joint forest certification administrators; and joint forest certification (small-scale farming) representatives. The aim of the symposium was to analyze and examine the advanced practices adopted by Linyi to implement joint forest certification for small-scale farming. Given its status as the most experienced player in forest certification for small-scale farming, Bureau Veritas was invited to present a keynote speech at the event.

On the first day of the symposium, attending representatives learned about Linyi's implementation of the FSC® joint forest certification for small-scale farming from various perspectives. They looked at the methods and practical measures used to encourage forestry development and raise farming income, such as forestry carbon sequestration, forest tenure reforms, forestry insurance, and forestry loans. Certification bodies form an important link in the joint forest certification process, and with this in mind, Liu Meili - product manager of Bureau Veritas Certification Asia Forestry Center - gave a well-received speech which affirmed Linyi's efforts and results with respect to the FSC joint forest certification process, and also provided an in-depth analysis of the problems and challenges that China is facing in its efforts to implement joint forest certification for small-scale farming.

The next day, participants visited forest areas in Linyi that have earned the FSC joint forest certification, and met with organizations that have joined the joint forest certification program. At the forest sites, participants keenly felt the positive effects that forest certification have had in boosting the standards of forest land management. Joint forest certification raises environmental awareness among participating members and also helps to increase farming income, thereby allowing it to bring about a harmonious blend of social, economic and environmental benefits.

The symposium was successful in analyzing and summarizing Linyi's experience in joint forest certification for new generation planted forests and small-scale farming, which in turn allowed for a theoretical understanding of the program. As the most experienced certification body in China when it comes to joint forest certification for small-scale farming, Bureau Veritas will continue to work closely with stakeholders to help promote and develop joint forest certification for small-scale farming in China.
